New Illinois Statewide Delivery to Commence January 2, 2008
The
Intrasystem Library Delivery Service (ILDS) has operated in Illinois for more
than 25 years. The statewide delivery service is getting a slightly new name
and will be expanded starting January 2, 2008. The new name is Illinois Library
Delivery Service (still ILDS). The other big difference is that all Illinois
academic libraries that are governing or associate members of the Consortium
of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) will now be direct stops
on ILDS.
PALS member libraries that are also new ILDS locations will be receiving training
from CARLI on proper shipping procedures. For non-CARLI libraries, the main
change is getting used to a new ILDS label and new ILDS codes. There are now
a number of training materials on the PALS website at: http://www.palsnet.info/services/delivery/default.asp.
We would ask that all staff at non-ILDS libraries that processes interlibrary
loans or returns materials review this information and ask questions.
All libraries should begin using the new ILDS label as of January 2, 2008.

Guide to Roving: An Essential Service for Library 2.0
Presented by: Joan
Giannone - President, Mentor Group Training Inc.
Tuesday, December 11, 2007,
11 a.m. - noon Eastern / 8 a.m. - 9 a.m. Pacific
Across North America, and
around the world, Libraries are working to implement Roving Reference as
a practical way to both improve service to their existing customers, and
to attract and convert new ones into loyal patrons. Both Public and Academic
Libraries are encouraging their staff to step out from behind their desks
and reach out to their "hidden customers" - the 50 % or more -
those thousands of customers - who are reluctant to approach staff at the
Reference desk and so remain un-served. One of the driving forces behind
the need for Roving at Libraries has been, and continues to be technological
change. And following in the wake of the implementation of technology in
any organization is the challenge posed by transition. Technological Change
is comprised of external forces (Library 2.0, RSS, Wikki's, IM, Installing
free downloadable digital content, policy changes, structure change, etc.).
Transition is internally focused: (the reflection, re-grouping, reorientation
and training people have to go through before the change can work) because,
unprepared people can be nervous, or even resistant. Register now to take
part in this FREE webinar.
Joan Giannone is a recognized mentor and trainer
with over 20 years experience helping many organizations and Libraries achieve
positive results, by focusing on communication and satisfaction for customers
and staff. As President of Mentor Group Training Inc., Joan has dedicated
all her company's energy over the last 4 years solely to supporting the progress
and success of Libraries. Many Library managers and staff have heard about
or have attended one of Joan's workshops, listened to one of her audio presentations
or read one of her articles published online. Her popular BLOG "Joan's
Compass" has 27 articles and submissions about Roving. (www.mentorgrouptraining.com)

AASL Releases Report on First Longitudinal Survey
(ALA,
CHICAGO) - The American Association
of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association
(ALA), has just released the results of its first longitudinal survey, School
Libraries Count! The survey, conducted January-March 2007, gathered data in
a number of areas, including library staff, collections, technology, class
visits and budgets. AASL will be using the data to develop tools to help library
media specialists advocate at the local, state and national level. "In
a time of budget cuts and confusion about the role of library media specialists," said
AASL president Sara Kelly Johns, "it is more critical than ever that both
the profession and educational decision-makers understand the state of the
nation's school library media programs." The survey will be conducted
annually and will result in a longitudinal series that will provide data on
the health of the nation's school library media programs. The second survey
is scheduled to open at the 2008 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia. Nancy
Everhart, chair of the AASL Research and Statistics Committee, said, "The
data from this survey will be valuable to researchers and practitioners alike.
Researchers can use it to support further studies, and practitioners can use
it to compare their programs to national benchmarks."

Pregnancy related medical conditions may
or may not qualify a library or library system employee for leave under current
law. Library administrators should be aware of which laws are to be considered
when approached by an employee for such leave. In addition, hiring procedures,
provision of healths insurance and distribution of fringe benefits can be affected
by the law pertaining to pregnant applicants for employment and current employees.
This article will explain how the law applies to these situations.

Application, Theme and Titles Announced for Great Stories Club Grant
Book club
program funded by Oprah’s Angel Network will target underserved, troubled
teen populations
(ALA,
CHICAGO) - The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs
Office, in cooperation with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA),
is pleased to announce that applications for the Great Stories Club are now
available at www.ala.org/greatstories. Applications from all types of libraries
will be accepted through Feb. 1. Funding has been provided by a grant from
Oprah's Angel Network. The Great Stories Club is a reading and discussion program
designed to reach underserved, troubled teen populations through books that
are relevant to their lives. The program is built on partnerships between libraries
and a variety of organizations that serve troubled teens: juvenile justice
facilities; alternative high schools; drug rehabilitation centers and nonprofits
serving teen parents; and other agencies. Teen participants are invited to
read and keep three theme-related books and encouraged to consider and discuss
each title with a group of their peers. The program's ultimate goal is to inspire
young adults who face difficult situations to take control of their lives by
embracing the power of reading.
YALSA's Outreach to Young Adults with Special
Needs Committee selected "Choices" as the 2008 Great Stories Club
theme, along with the following titles:
Tyrell by Coe Booth (Scholastic, Inc.,
2007)
Hole in My Life by Jack Gantos (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2002)
Sold
by Patricia McCormick (Hyperion, 2006)
All types of libraries (public, school,
academic and special), located within or working in partnership with facilities
serving troubled teens in the United States and its territories, are eligible
to apply for a Great Stories Club grant. Up to 200 libraries will be selected
to develop a book discussion program for teens based on the three theme-related
titles and will be given copies of the books to share with each participant.
Participating libraries will also receive access to an online toolkit to support
the program, including sample discussion questions, recommended titles for
further reading, downloadable bookmark art and other resources. Small cash
grants ($100-$200) will be awarded to up to 20 sites for the support of program-related
expenses. Guidelines, application instructions and the online application are
now available at www.ala.org/greatstories. Applications will be accepted from
Dec. 3 through Feb. 1.
Time to Apply for The Big Read
Application Deadline: February 12, 2008
(IMLS, Washington,
DC)—The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in partnership
with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), announces the fourth deadline
for the Big Read program. The purpose of the Big Read is to revitalize the
role of literature in American popular culture. Grants ranging from $5,000 – $20,000
are available to encourage local communities to inspire reading through the
Big Read program. This will be the only application deadline in 2008.
Big Read
grants require the participation of a library as a lead applicant or a partner.
IMLS strongly encourages museums of all types to apply as lead applicants or
as partner organizations in the Big Read. Communities across the country have
strengthened their Big Read projects by enlisting the support of art, science,
history, and children’s museums, as well as aquaria, arboreta, botanical
gardens, nature centers, and zoos.
Organizations selected to participate in the Big Read will receive a grant,
financial support to attend a national orientation meeting, educational and
promotional materials for broad distribution, an organizer’s guide for
developing and managing Big Read activities, guidance on working with local
media, inclusion of the organization and its activities on the Big Read Web
site, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative.
The Request for Proposals can be downloaded at www.NEABigRead.org. The proposal
deadline is February 12, 2008. Questions should be directed to Arts Midwest
at 612/341-0755 or TheBigRead@artsmidwest.org.
