Holiday Closing
The PALS Service Centers will be closed on Monday, September
3, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. There will be no deliveries made
that day. Deliveries will resume on September 4.
Our Condolences
to
Cori Swanson, Administrative Assistant at PALS, on the death of her grandmother,
Vera Ebert, this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with Cori and her family
at this difficult time.
School Delivery Resumes
Just a reminder that school deliveries will resume starting September 4th.
Freeport Neighborhood Meeting
Please mark your calendar for Tuesday,
October 2, 2007 for the Freeport Neighborhood Meeting at Forreston Public Library.
We will meet from 9:30-11:30 a.m. This will be an opportunity to meet the PALS
liaison to the Freeport Neighborhood, to network with colleagues and to discuss
what is happening in the neighborhood and at PALS. Please register in CLeO
if you plan to attend.
For additional information, please contact http://dawnd@palsnet.info Dawn
DiVenti.
Save the Date!
PALS will host an "All PALS" meeting on
Tuesday, November 6, 2007, available by videoconference at all eight neighborhood
locations. This meeting will be an update on various topics/projects by PALS
staff and an opportunity for neighborhood networking. Watch for more details
in a few weeks.
Bus Ride to ILA Exhibits
PALS is once again proposing to offer
a bus ride from each of the Service Centers to ILA Exhibits at the 2007 Conference
in Springfield. Because of a change in the ILA Exhibits schedule, the ride
is being offered on Wednesday, October 10th with arrival planned in time for
the Opening Lunch Reception at 12:30 PM and the bus will leave for the return
trip at 5 PM. The cost of the ride is $30. Besides the Service Centers, pickups
may be offered at Rochelle, Peru, and Dwight.
We ask you to please register
in http://palsnet.info/events as soon
as possible. Because of the financial commitment involved in using a bus, we
will need at least 20 riders per point of origin registered by September 5th.
If we do not meet that goal then we will endeavor to arrange an alternative
ride for registrants.
Questions about the rides should be addressed to Nancy
Smith at nancys@palsnet.info or x4466.
It is the practice of the PALS business
office to invoice the member library for the ride after the event.
If you need
other financial arrangements made, please notify Debbie Fowler at debbief@palsnet.info.

Librarians (NIDL) Meeting
NIDL is a local group of librarians,
in a variety of different types of libraries, who work at least some of the time
with government documents and government information (although many of our members
also wear other hats), and our membership area includes much of the region served
by PALS. We meet twice a year and would like to publicize the meeting dates and
agendas so that interested people in PALS can attend. We also want to keep people
informed about the activities of our training team, so that PALS libraries that
might be interested in local training on using government information are aware
of us as a resource. Our next meeting will be Friday, September 14 at Lake Forest
College. We cover a wide area though and future meetings will be closer to home
for PALS folks.

E-Rate Corner
I
have had questions recently regarding due dates for technology plans. As far
as E-Rate is concerned, there are two important dates: Creation date – This
is the date that your technology plan is first created or written. It must
be before the date that your Form 470 is filed, as the Form 470 must be based
on the information contained in the technology plan.
Approved date – This
is the date that your technology plan is approved by a USAC-certified Technology
Plan Approver. For PALS Illinois libraries that is the Illinois State Library
and is in the drop down list in Block 4, Item 8 on the Form 486. Your plan
must be in effect during the period you receive discounted services.
PALS libraries
can submit their technology plans to Kacy Kelly at our Coal Valley Service
Center and he will forward them to the appropriate person at the State Library.
Kacy can also help with questions you might have when creating your own plan.
Remember that a technology plan is not required if you are only applying for
basic telephone service discounts from E-Rate.
For any E-Rate questions contact
Marilyn at PALS Rockford 815-229-4470 or email marilynj@palsnet.info

The War: A Ken Burns Film from PBS Video
Explore the history of the Second World
War from an American perspective by following the fortunes of ordinary men
and women caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in history. Six years
in the making, this epic 15 hour film, directed and produced by Ken Burns and
Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts
of nearly 50 men and women from four quintessentially American towns. Follow
the people from each community through their personal and often harrowing journeys
into war, and hear how the war dramatically altered their lives and those of
their neighbors, as well as the country they helped to save for generations
to come. The War will begin airing Sunday, September 23. Libraries can order

Legislative/Advocacy News
Various Legislators Adds
Libraries to Their District Budget Lists
Some
of you noticed that this week’s ILA mailing included a list of many libraries
that are shown as having budgeted appropriations. Do keep in mind that until
the budget is actually signed and agreed to, this is not final. Nevertheless,
we hope that the libraries send their representative a thank you. Whether or
not this goes through in this difficult budget year, they thought of and remembered
libraries. Plus, there’s always next year! Other legislators had ear-marked
funds for libraries that were cut by the Governor's veto.

Just So You Know
Constitution Day ~ September 17
September
17 is celebrated as Constitution Day because the Constitution was adopted that
day in 1787. In 2005, Congress mandated that all schools receiving federal funds
must teach about the Constitution on September 17. Information about this federal
requirement is available online, along with links to Library of Congress resources.
Prairie
