Here are some snapshots of this year's programs:
Thriving in Tough Times (Keynote speech) -
Libraries support sustainable communities and meet community needs. They connect people with information and are a vital tool for democracy. However, many libraries are under threat of closure or are facing reduced resources. Civic Entrepreneur Taylor Willingham will discuss new ways of thinking about how libraries contribute public value and the distinct competencies they contribute to their community. Willingham will share ideas about how current economic, social and political trends provide exciting new opportunities for libraries to strengthen community, create capacity, generate value, and develop relationships.
Tools for Thriving Through Tough Times (afternoon workshop)
- Learn about new and innovative as well as tried-and-true tools for engaging your community and demonstrating your library’s contribution to community. Despite the tough economic times, people are responding to the call for service. Learn how you can become a leader in this trend.
Mrs. Lincoln -
Through her experience in area theaters for over a decade, Laura Keyes will be delighting us with her presentation entitled "Mrs. Lincoln". Miss Keyes was praised for her portrayal of Mary Lincoln in August 2008 at the Winneshiek Playhouse in Freeport, IL, in conjunction with the Sesquicentennial of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. This presentation was meticulously researched by Miss Keyes, whose degree in Library Studies aided her approach. The presentation focusing on the life and losses of Mary Lincoln will be set on April 14th 1865.
Freeing Dewey: Frankfort's Conversion to a Dewey-Free Library
- In June 2008, the Frankfort Public Library District began transferring their Adult Nonfiction collection to a new classification system based on the "bookstore model". The Dewey Free model allows for a complete redesign and relocation of collections, focusing on user-centered services. Melissa Rice and Joanna Kolendo from the Frankfort PLD will discuss why library staff implemented a Dewey-Free System and they will chronicle the progression of the project.
Hot Off the Presses: What's New and What's Coming in Children's and YA Literature
- Hear about the newest titles and what is coming in children's literature, including picture books, informational books, poetry, beginning chapter books and novels. Learn ways to help teachers connect the books to their K-12 curriculum, and the best new books for sharing in storytime.
Best Books for Book Groups -
Discover the best books for book groups, including new fiction and non-fiction, as well as a few book group favorites you might have missed!
Project Surf Safe: Navigating the Hidden Dangers of the Internet
- The Internet and e-mail have become one of the most common ways for people to communicate with each other. Many people conduct business, shop, research and do a host of other activities online.
However, the anonymous environment of the Internet can be dangerous. The reality of the Internet is that we never really know if the people we are talking to are really who they say they are.
To give parents and educators the tools needed to keep their kids safe on the Internet, Attorney General Madigan has created an innovative program regarding the realities of online safety. This program, Project Surf Safe: Navigating the Hidden Dangers of the Internet, is a useful tool in helping parents and educators stay informed about the dangers lurking on the Internet.
An Informal Hour with Andrew Carnegie
- Andrew Bro and William Sparboe will provide an entertaining program on Andrew Carnegie.
How to Use Your Website to Effectively Market Your Library
- Websites can be wonderful assets – or unused liabilities that no one wants to visit. Marilyn will cover how to make sure that YOUR website earns its keep and works for you! She’ll also review how to make sure that expectations for a website are in line with what is scoped to accomplish (and how to define scope), what websites do best and what challenges they represent (both inherent and thrust upon them by their owners/creators), and how to best utilize your website as a cost-effective tool – especially important in these challenging economic times.
Len Lindquist Spirit Award
In celebration of the 5th PALS Day on April 24th, some special things are being planned. The “Len Lindquist Spirit Award” was created to honor Len (Manager, Technology Services) who passed away suddenly on February 28, 2008. The award will be given to an employee of a PALS member library who possesses some of the special qualities that we admired in Len. The award selection committee is comprised of a group of PALS librarians who will review the nominations and select the recipient. The award winner will be announced at PALS Day. Len’s wife and daughter are also planning to attend. See the PALS website for the nomination form, information sheet, and flyer with more details.
