The Prairie Area Library System (PALS) is one of nine multitype regional library systems in Illinois and receives general operation funds through a grant from the Illinois State Library, part of offices of Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse White. PALS was formed on July 1, 2004, through a merger of the Heritage Trail, Northern Illinois, and River Bend library systems. We have service centers (offices) in Coal Valley, Rockford, and Shorewood.

Our services to member libraries include communications, consulting, continuous learning, delivery, group purchases and technology services. PALS employees manage PrairieCat, an automation consortium of 90 online and 111 union listing libraries.

The Executive Director of PALS is Michael Piper.
